Where are you, FedEx??

I’m sitting in a NYC taxi writing this blog post, heading to the Waldorf Towers after a stressful day on the phone with FedEx. Unfortunately, FedEx did not deliver a package that was scheduled for 10:30AM this morning. Inside the package is a one-of-a-kind prop that I use in every show. Unfortunately, I’ll have to skip that routine tonight.

My package arrived at the FedEx facility in Newark, NJ at 7:10AM, and has just been sitting there all day. The telephone agents claim that no FedEx flights are being dispatched. I said, “But this is not a flight – it’s a truck!” My package is sitting in a warehouse that is 45 minutes away from my apartment, and they just won’t deliver it.

I paid extra to have the package arrive early (priority overnight), and asked for a partial refund. The FedEx telephone agent said, “Sorry, we can’t change the weather.” I retorted, “Yeah, but you’re FedEx! What happened to your guarantee?” She said that all guarantees are off when the weather is bad. Funny – my mailman didn’t seem to have any trouble coming on time today.

This missing package will affect my Chamber Magic shows tonight, so I’ll be performing some of my favorite alternate items that deserve to be rotated into the program from time to time.

Got my package at the main FedEx office in Manhattan today. Even that, though, was a mini-disaster. When I arrived at the FedEx center on 49th Street and 12th Avenue (which is on the very edge of town), they told me that they won’t be able to find my package for another 2 hours!

They told me to come back later, but after a long trip to their office, I decided to wait. I’m still finding it hard to believe that only two (TWO!) employees work in the major FedEx sorting center.

After 20 minutes of waiting, they told me that they located my package, and I was soon on my way.

Don’t expect any Steve Cohen endorsements of FedEx in the near future.

I can relate to this. FedEX is by far the best courier I have used but there was one time last year when they lost a $5,000 check of mine that was coming from NYC to Westchester. After several phone calls and some shouting, a few days later I did receive my package, although a bit gnarled and soiled. My guess is it probably got stuck in a sorting machine or between the driver’s seat cushion and that boloney sandwich from 1998.

I still think they are far better than UPS who is famous for losing things. USPS isn’t bad either. Most companies I deal with still use FedEX and at least you can insure the package, however something that’s irreplaceable would probably be best transported by hand, or through a security company who’s employees tote automatic weapons and bengal tigers. ;)

spikeDrain – you made me laugh out loud: “That boloney sandwich from 1998…” Ha! Keep ‘em coming.
